American Idol Winner Jordin Sparks Defends Purity Rings On MTV
Published: September 09, 2008
On Sunday, while many tuned into the MTV Video Music Awards to catch a glimpse of the hailed comeback of Britney Spears, it was the exchange between little known British comedian Russell Brand, the host of the awards show, and openly Christian music star and American Idol winner, Jordan Sparks, that provided the most talked about highlights of the night.
Brand, who is relatively unknown in the United States but is popular in the United Kingdom, took a number of jabs at the Jonas Brothers and the purity rings they wear as a symbol of their vow not to have premarital sex.
The band, which consists of three brothers whose father happens to be a pastor, wear the rings on their left-hand ring finger as a reminder of a "promise to ourselves and to God that we'll stay pure 'till marriage." The popular music band also say they abstain from alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
At one point during the night, the British funnyman pretended he had actually stolen the virginity of one of the Jonas Brothers band while played with a ring in his hand.
"Let me tell you," said Brand, "it was an enjoyable and pleasant experience and I wish the rest of the Jonas brothers the best of luck because over the course of the evening I want a collection of these bloody things."
Following Brand's comments, Jordin Sparks, a fellow purity ring wearer, took to the stage, and just before presenting an award, defended the Christian brother band with a quick statement.
"I just wanna say, it's not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and a girl wants to be a @#!%, OK?" Sparks stated, which drew an drawing the applause of the crowd.
Sparks later told both FoxNews.com and News.com.au that while she "didn't mean to offend anybody" in attendance, she was "more than happy" to put Brand in his place.
