Obama and McCain Gear Up For Tuesday’s Presidential Debate
Published: October 07, 2008
On Tuesday night, Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain face off again for their second presidential debate, which will be held at Belmont University, located in Nashville, Tenn. The debate will be in a town hall format, one Sen. McCain has said on occasions is his favorite style of campaigning.
Many Republican analysts believe this debate may be McCain's best chance to stop Democrat Barack Obama's recent surge in the race and turn it in his favor. With four weeks left before Election Day, the debate will be moderated by NBC's Tom Brokaw and will include questions on both foreign and domestic policy.
Tuesday night's debate may provide an opportunity for both candidates to go after each other on character issues, which both campaign teams have re-injected into the race since the weekend.
GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin recently resurrected ties with Sen. Obama to 1960s-era radical William Ayers and Obama's former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
While in North Carolina, Obama responded saying that McCain was engaging "in the usual political shenanigans and smear tactics" to distract from economic issues. However, the Obama campaign team released a video recounting McCain's involvement in the 1980s Keating Five savings and loan scandal in which the Senate Ethics Committee criticized his "poor judgment."
The town hall format is expected to aid McCain in his pursuit to catch Obama, who is gaining ground in all 5 battleground states, according to recent polls.
